SUMMARY  

Fall Trail Summary  

  • More typical Fall like weather conditions recently, complete with periods of rain, snow, wind, freezing temperatures have reduced the fire danger, prompted removal of public use restrictions related to high fire danger and resulted in some seasonal road closures and coated high elevations in snow.
  • Paulina Peak Road and Road 370 from Todd Lk parking area to road junction 4601 now closed to motorized use due to snow and for resource protection.
  • Recent snow at higher elevations with up to 16” on some trails, makes for some difficult to inaccessible summer trails above 6,000’.
  • Strong Fall winds increase blow down on some trails.
  • Pole Ck Fire closure reduced: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3244/
  • Volunteers and trail personnel beging winter trail maintenance and warming shelter stocking.
  • Tumalo Falls Trailhead and access road 4603 are scheduled to reopen Oct. 27. Until further notice, Bend Municipal water system improvement project has been put on hold.

ROADS

Seasonal Road Closures and Openings: 

  • Fall season is here and seasonal road closures due to snow may occur with little to no notice!  Watch weather forecasts closely, prepare your vehicle for the winter season and avoid traveling during severe winter conditions if you can.
  • Pole Creek Fire closure has been reduced.  For latest closure notices:  http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3244/
  • Hwy 46 Currently open from Bend to Crescent Cutoff road but do expect little to possibly no notice of closure due to moderate snow fall.  Deschutes County Road Department determines closure on this section of Hwy 46 and moderate snow depth creating hazardous travel are the primary conditions officials take into consideration. 
  • Road 370 now CLOSED due to snow from Todd Lake to Road 4601.  This includes Road 380 and up to Broken Top Trailhead. 
  • Road 21 into Newberry Caldera– OPEN currently with closure expected at end of October. 
  • Road to Paulina Peak CLOSED for the winter season. 
  • Road 4603 to Tumalo Falls TH and Tumalo Falls TH scheduled to reopen Oct. 27. Until further notice, Bend Municipal water system improvement project has been put on hold. Expect road to close due to seasonal snow closure when there is approximately 8-10” of snow at the gate.
  • Lava Lands with vehicle access to Lava Butte closed for the season.  Hikers and bikers will find parking at the Blackrock Trailhead just south end of Lava Lands.
  • Hwy 242, McKenzie Pass, Highway OPEN at this time but subject to seasonal closure due to snow.
  • 16 Road reopened with public access on the east side of road.  West side of road is closed due to the Pole Creek Fire.  Go to: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3244/
  • On Crescent Ranger District: Seasonal/snow closure of  following roads may occur with little to no notice: Road 60 – Open!  Road access to Summit Lake/ Immigrant Pass, OPEN, is rough (high clearance 4wd strongly recommended), Windigo Pass rough road.
